Life Behind the Mic: My Journey as a Scottish Voiceover Artist
I’ve been working as a voiceover artist for many years now, and it’s an industry that still excites me every single day. Based in Scotland, I work remotely from my own professional booth, recording for brilliant clients across the UK and far beyond.
Like many people in the voiceover world, my journey started in a slightly different place — acting. Performance was always something I loved, and it eventually led me into broadcasting. I went on to work as a continuity announcer at BBC Scotland in Glasgow, which was a fantastic experience and a real turning point in my career. It was during that time that voiceover opportunities began to appear. One job led to another, the phone kept ringing, and before long voiceover work became a major part of what I do.
Back in the early days, a lot of my work was delivered through ISDN lines, which at the time felt incredibly high-tech. The industry has moved on quite a bit since then. These days I regularly record from my own booth using modern systems like Source-Connect or by sending high-quality pre-recorded audio directly to clients. It means I can work quickly and efficiently with producers and creatives wherever they happen to be in the world. That said, I still enjoy the occasional trip into a traditional studio — there’s always something special about being in the room with a team and bringing a script to life together.
One of the things I love most about this job is the variety. No two days are ever quite the same. I record everything from radio commercials and TV adverts to trailers, corporate pieces, announcements, and more. It’s always interesting to explore different scripts, different tones, and different creative ideas with a wide range of clients and producers.
And the funny thing about voiceovers is that you often hear them everywhere without even realising it. You might hear my voice in the supermarket over the tannoy, on the television, in your car on the radio, or even when you’re on hold on the phone. One day I might be selling a punnet of mince, and the next it might be a high-end car! That’s the beauty of the industry — every project brings something new.
I’m delighted to now have my new website up and running, which makes it easier than ever for people to connect with me. You can listen to voice examples, check out the different styles I offer, and get in touch directly about your project. You can even check my availability instantly.
There’s plenty more to come, and thankfully the one thing that tends not to change too much in this line of work is the voice itself.
